Acupuncture for Beginners: What It Is, What to Expect, and Whether It’s Right for You

If you’ve never tried acupuncture, you probably have questions. Does it hurt? What actually happens? Is it safe? How many visits will I need? I’m Dorothy Pang, L.Ac., and I’ve been practicing in South San Francisco for more than 25 years. This is a plain-language guide to the basics, with links to my longer articles when you want more detail.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy in which very thin, sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body. In Chinese medicine, these points are thought to affect the flow of energy, or Qi, and many people use acupuncture to support pain relief, relaxation, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

What is it used for?

People come to acupuncture for many reasons. The ones I see most often are:

Acupuncture isn’t a cure-all, but it does help with a lot of complaints; the research varies by condition. I’ll always tell you honestly what it may and may not do for you.

How does it work?

Researchers are still studying exactly how acupuncture works. We know it can affect the nervous system, including the release of endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers, and it can help your body shift out of a stressed state into a calmer one. I explain more in Acupuncture Is the Original Nervous System Regulation.

What happens at your first visit?

  1. We talk. I ask about your main concerns, health history, medications, sleep, digestion, stress, and goals. Fertility patients usually get the most detailed intake.
  2. I gently place the needles. You lie comfortably on a treatment table, and I insert the needles quickly and skillfully at the points we’ve chosen. Most patients feel a tapping sensation.
  3. You rest. I leave you to relax with soothing music for about 30 minutes, and many patients nap. Often I’ll add a heat lamp.
  4. I remove the needles, and we talk about how you feel and what comes next.

Your first visit usually takes 70 to 80 minutes, and follow-up visits are typically about 60 minutes. For tips on what to eat and wear, see What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?

Does it hurt?

Most people find my acupuncture comfortable. The needles are hair-thin, I move very quickly, and most people feel very little. If you’re nervous, tell me, and we’ll go at your pace. I wrote a whole article on this: What Does Acupuncture Feel Like? Does Acupuncture Hurt? If needles are a deal-breaker, laser acupuncture is a needle-free option.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your condition and how long you’ve had it. Many people notice changes within several visits, and we’ll talk about a realistic plan at your first appointment. See How Many Acupuncture Sessions Do You Really Need? for more.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is generally very safe when done by a licensed acupuncturist using sterile, single-use needles. Minor bruising or soreness can happen. I’m a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.), licensed by the California Acupuncture Board.

Please tell me before treatment if you’re pregnant, take blood thinners, have a pacemaker, or have a bleeding disorder, because it changes how I treat you. And if you have a new or worsening symptom, such as unexplained pain, numbness, or weakness, see your doctor first.

What does it cost?

Coverage for acupuncture varies by plan. I provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement, and HSA and FSA funds can often be used. You can read more on my insurance page, and I’m happy to answer questions about fees before your first visit.

Is acupuncture right for you?

Acupuncture works well alongside your other care, and I’m happy to coordinate with your doctor. If you’re curious, a first visit is the best way to find out. We’ll talk through your situation, and I’ll tell you honestly whether I think it’s a good fit.
