Details for After Your Microneedling session for Best Results
After your microneedling session, what should you expect and do? Here are some detailed instructions.
1. Expect Redness for 8-12 Hours
Microneedling causes micro-traumas in the superficial layers of the skin, and that increases blood flow to create a healing reaction that will result in more collagen production. That means that typically for a few hours after treatment, there is usually redness on the treated areas. Don’t worry, this is normal.
2. No Exercise Today
The skin is extra porous after treatment, and it’s so sensitive that even the salts in sweat will cause irritation. For this reason, it is recommended to avoid exercise for the rest of the day after a microneedling treatment.
3. Avoid Sun Exposure
Fresh after a microneedling treatment, the skin is extra sensitive, so stay out of the sun for the rest of the day. For the next few days, wear mineral sunscreen and preferably a hat if you must be outside. Try to minimize sun exposure for a few days.
4. No Make Up Today
Do not apply make up to the skin during the day after treatment, it can cause irritation or even infection.
5. Use Hyaluronic Acid if Dry
The skin might be a bit sensitive right after treatment, so only use hyaluronic acid and water spray on the skin the day of the treatment. There might be some appearance of “peeling”, but that’s the hyaluronic acid on the surface of the skin. Just spray water if you feel or see lumps of hyaluronic acid atop the skin.
6. Only Wash with Water Tonight
Keep your skincare routing very simple and just rinse with water tonight. You can also apply hyaluronic acid if you are feeling dry afterwards, and perhaps a very simple moisturizer. Do not use peels, scrubs, or acids tonight.
7. Return to Normal Skincare Routine Tomorrow
You can generally return to your normal skincare routine the next day, just practice caution if you have sensitive skin or use exfoliants or peels.
8. It Takes 2+ Weeks for Full Results
Microneedling triggers the skin to produce a healing response. This means that it will take time for your skin to physically rebuild it’s surface for you. Results therefore will take 2-4 weeks, as the healing process takes that long.
9. Space Microneedling Sessions 4 Weeks Apart
Since the full healing process takes 4 weeks, it is recommended to space treatments 4 weeks apart. If you’d prefer a more assertive treatment strategy, nanoneedling may be added weekly until the next microneedling session.
