Acupuncture and Advanced Maternal Age: What You Should Know
Pregnant woman's body, representing a healthy pregnancy at advanced maternal age

If you’ve heard the term “advanced maternal age” from your doctor, you might have felt a small jolt hearing it applied to you. It’s a clinical label, not a judgment — but it’s worth understanding what it actually means, and more importantly, what you can do about it.

What Counts as Advanced Maternal Age?

Advanced maternal age (AMA) is the medical term used for pregnancy in a woman who will be 35 or older on her due date. It’s simply a risk classification used by doctors to guide monitoring and testing — it doesn’t mean you can’t have a healthy pregnancy. Many women well past 35 go on to have entirely healthy pregnancies and babies. It’s a flag for extra attention, not a verdict.

That said, it’s true that egg quantity and quality can naturally decline with age, and this is where I think acupuncture can have a real, meaningful influence.

Why Electroacupuncture Matters Here

Not all acupuncture is the same, and this is a distinction I think about a lot when treating AMA patients. Electroacupuncture — where a gentle electrical current is passed between needles — has been shown in research to increase blood flow specifically to the ovaries, in a way that regular, non-electric acupuncture doesn’t achieve to the same degree. And if you’re not familiar, don’t worry, electroacupuncture has a bit of an odd name, but the feeling I’m looking for from you is just a sensation of a slight tingle or tickle. So, the experience is easy.

A study published in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology found that low-frequency electroacupuncture significantly increased ovarian blood flow. Separately, earlier research published in Human Reproduction found that electroacupuncture reduced blood flow resistance in the uterine arteries of women experiencing infertility — meaning blood moved more freely to the reproductive organs that need it most.

Here’s why that matters so much for AMA patients specifically: when blood flow to the ovaries improves, the ovaries are better nourished and better supported. In my own words, I think of it as helping the ovaries “act younger.” You can’t technically turn back the clock, but you can absolutely give your body more of what it needs to function at its best, whatever your age.

In sessions, I also often use infrared heat, which adds warmth and comfort and supports overall relaxation and circulation during treatment.

The Role of Relaxation

I also make a point of playing calming music and teaching relaxation techniques during sessions — something I take seriously, having been personally trained and certified in relaxation techniques by Dr. Alice Domar, the Harvard-affiliated researcher whose work I mentioned above. Her research, conducted at a Boston fertility clinic and published in Fertility and Sterility, followed women undergoing IVF who participated in a mind/body stress reduction program alongside their treatment. Among women completing a second IVF cycle, those in the relaxation program became pregnant at more than double the rate of those who didn’t participate.

Fertility treatment, and AMA in particular, can already carry a lot of pressure and anxiety. I think giving your body real, dedicated time to relax during treatment isn’t just pleasant — it may genuinely support your outcome, and it’s part of why I built this training directly into how I treat every patient.

25+ Years Focused on Fertility Acupuncture

I bring over 25 years of experience specifically in fertility acupuncture to this work, and advanced maternal age is an area I’ve focused on closely throughout that time. I’ve successfully treated many cases of AMA, and it’s a population I genuinely enjoy working with. Most of these patients choose to combine acupuncture with IVF, since time is often limited and they want every advantage available to them.

Here’s something I want to share, because it runs counter to what a lot of people are told: age alone doesn’t determine your outcome. I’ve had patients come to me after a failed IVF cycle, having essentially been told that their results were what they should expect given their age. They completed three months of acupuncture preparation with me, and went on to have a successful IVF cycle and a healthy newborn.

I don’t say this to overpromise — every case is different, and I can’t guarantee an outcome for anyone. But after 25 years focused on fertility acupuncture, I do believe, based on what I’ve consistently seen, that when we treat the body well and give it more resources through acupuncture and better self-care, we can see meaningfully better results — even after time has already passed and even after a previous cycle didn’t work.

Why AMA Patients Are Some of My Favorite to Work With

Something I’ve noticed over the years: patients navigating advanced maternal age tend to be especially focused and patient. They understand the stakes, and they show up consistently and take the process seriously. That combination — focus and patience — makes for genuinely productive work together, and I find we’re able to get real results as a team.

If there’s one thing I’d want every AMA patient to know, it’s this: time matters, so it’s worth making the call and starting as soon as you’re ready. The earlier we begin, the more we can do together.
