How to Prepare for Facial Microneedling

Details on How to Best Prepare for Your Microneedling session for Best Results

How to Prepare for Facial Microneedling

1. Consultation with a Professional If Unsure

Microneedling is minimall invasive and has a short, quick recovery time. However, if you are unsure if microneedling is appropriate for you, before scheduling your microneedling session, book a free consultation to talk about your concerns. I will assess your concerns to determine if microneedling is suitable for you. I can also answer any questions you might have.

2. Avoid Sun Exposure

In the days leading up to your treatment, avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning. Sunburned or tanned skin can increase the risk of complications and hinder the healing process. Always use a mineral sunscreen with at least SPF 30 when going outdoors to ensure your skin is in good condition before treatment.

3. Discontinue Certain Skincare Products

Stop using products that can irritate your skin at least a week before your appointment. This includes acids, scrubs and peels like: retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and other exfoliating agents. You don’t want your skin irritated at your appointment.

4. Avoid Local Hair Removal

Avoid shaving 24 hours before your treatment. Don’t wax, use depilatory creams, or use electrolosis for 5-7 days before your appointment.

5. Stay Hydrated

Hydrated skin responds better to microneedling. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment to keep your skin well-hydrated, especially the last 24 yours. You can also use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin plump and healthy.

6. Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications

Certain medications and supplements can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. These include aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E. Consult your healthcare provider before discontinuing any medications, and inform Dorothy about any supplements or medications you’re taking that may thin the blood.

7. Skip Alcohol and Caffeine; Hydrate Enough

Reduce or avoid alcohol and caffeine intake for at least 24 hours before your treatment. Both can dehydrate your skin and increase sensitivity, which can affect the treatment’s effectiveness and your comfort during the procedure. If you’re properly hydrated this gives your skin the best chance at a good healing process after treatment.

8. Plan Your Schedule

Microneedling may cause temporary redness and swelling, similar to a mild sunburn. Plan your treatment for a time when you can afford a couple of days of downtime, especially if you have a special event or important meeting coming up. Give your skin some time to heal between treatment and a big event. Do not plan on an outside event within the next 24 hours after. If this can’t be helped, wear a hat and mineral sunscreen.

9. Clean Your Skin

On the day of your treatment, arrive with a clean face free of makeup, lotions, or other skincare products. This ensures that your skin is free of any impurities that could interfere with the treatment or increase the risk of infection.
